Proximity Systems and Components, Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I buy ELDEC proximity products?

ELDEC has been supplying proximity sensing products to the aerospace market for over 35 years. We are the industry standard and are committed to delivering exceptional value to all of our customers.

Can proximity switches directly replace mechanical switches?

No, not directly. Proximity switches require no physical contact with the actuation structure. In most cases the installation for proximity switches is simpler than mechanical switches.

Why would I use proximity switches when mechanical switches cost less?

Proximity switches offer far better life cycle value than mechanical switches. Proximity switches have no moving components and do not have a finite switching life. Proximity switches live longer!

How reliable are proximity switches?

It is not uncommon to have actual MTBF performance that exceeds 1,000,000 hours. This is at least an order of magnitude better than mechanical switches.

What is the difference between a proximity switch and a proximity sensor?

Proximity switches are self-contained devices that combine the sensing element with the signal conditioning electronics. Proximity sensors only include the sensing element and require remotely located electronics to function.

Can proximity technology perform in harsh EMI environments such as HIRF?

ELDEC proximity technology can! Proximity technology is not inherently immune EMI. ELDEC has developed proprietary measurement techniques and filter algorithms that are proven in the harshest commercial and military environments.
